WORLD INFLUENCER ON
EDUCATION, POLITICS
AND CULTURE

Education in Britain is divided into 5 stages: early years, primary, secondary, Further Education (FE), and Higher Education (HE). British law stipulates that all students in compulsory education (5-16 years old) must receive full-time education. In England, the period of compulsory education for students born after September 1, 1997 was extended to 18 years. There are more than 160 institutions of higher education in the UK, with many of these being world-renowned such as Cambridge University, Oxford University and University College London.

Britain employs a federal system with a constitutional monarchy. The UK’s head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, while the Prime Minister is head of its Government. The UK also employs a multi-party democratic system with the two major parties being the Conservative’s and Labour.

The UK is home to one of the most multicultural societies anywhere in the world. The rate of multiculturalism has increased in the years after World War II, and in recent years, traditional notions of “British Style” have become more difficult to define, potentially signalling in a new area of English culture.

While Britain does not have an official language listed on the constitution, English is widely accepted as the countries official language and has therefore become its De Facto language. Other local languages include Welsh, Irish, Gaelic, Highland and Scots. Britain also has a long and storied history of producing globally recognised scholars and literary masterpieces, including arguably the most famous playwright of them all, William Shakespeare. The country is also the birthplace of many famous modern novelists including George Orwell and J.K. Rowling.

Britain is also home to a profound drama culture, with the West End of London being home to one of the most prestigious theatre areas in the UK (comparable to Broadway in the US) and there are different performances every day of the week. Overall, Britain has a unique and diverse culture, with its literature, music, dance and architecture being universally admired by people the world over.
